Meir functioned as a rock tomb cemetery for administration officials during the Old Kingdom-MIddle Kingdom (6th-12th Dynasty), the necropolis of the governors of the 14th nome of Upper Egypt.  The tombs are cut out of rocks with lower tombs on the hillside for commoners.
