Cairo on the Edge

Charcoal shadows line

the desert like old outposts.

The sand says, “Keep Out!”

Artist hands pull pencils onto flat

roofs layered square and domed,

restrained and dull. Against the leaden

buildings, ashen walls curse the waves of

sand heated, cooled, changing, shining ,blowing,

silently rub the ancient stones. Carved by hand stands

Cairo on the edge.
