Cairo Today – The Magazine

For those of us who are long time residents in Cairo, the magazine, Cairo Today was published monthly from 1979. Now, I might be wrong (please send corrections!) but I believe this magazine was the precursor to the magazine, Egypt Today, founded by William Harrison. As far as I know, Cairo Today was named so until 1989 or 1990 when the magazine’s name was changed to Egypt Today and possibly remained in hard copy until 2013 when it moved to an online platform. The English-language magazine featured articles about business, current news and local issues, culture, heritage and a most helpful section of events, places to go and restaurants. When reading the “content’ page, the authors of the articles read like ‘Who’s Who’: historians, archeologists, academics of the time: Kent and Susan Weeks, John, Elizabeth and Max Rodenbeck, Jill Kamil, Mursi Saad el Din, Neil R. Hewison, Caroline Williams, Samia Abdelnour, Cassandra Vivian, Jayme Spencer, G.H. Horn, Amina Elbadrawi, and the names go on and on. The following is the collection that I inherited from Jayme Spencer, who spent over 43 years at American University in Cairo Library as Director of Public Service. Thank you Jayme for passing this treasure to me to appreciate!

October and November 1981, Feb 1982, July 1982

In the next weeks, I will be posting some of the fascinating articles from some of the issues.

  1. Lesley, we look forward to your further postings and enjoyed every issue of the magazines. We collected them while we lived in Cairo, subscribed later and then carefully perused the many issues you gifted us. Thank you.
